No words I can use can paint the facts as that are faced every day by thousands of homeless people on the street right now. For most who witness this every day as you pass by another person walking with a pack on their back and maybe a dog by their side you tend not to pay them any mind. Some may feel sorry for them while others feel a sense of disgust and wish the authorities would get them out of their site. After all you think to yourself it's their own dam fault for being there in the first place. "Judge Not Less You Be Judged"
Then we come to the pan handler sitting by the stop sign with a sign asking for help and you dig in your pocket for a few bucks to satisfy your conscious. Some think well I just helped them get some food. However, its more than likely the drink or drugs they were after, and you wonder did I do the right thing? Maybe yes but more than likely no you think to yourself but shrug it off and feel better thinking at least you tried to help.
A few people flat don't care and simply don't want to be bothered after all we pay taxes for this kind of thing don't we. The government spends billions on everything else so why not prevent this by just locking them all up and being done with it. Sure, out of sight out of mind, as long as you don't have to deal with it!
Talking to people with that mind-set is like trying to explain nuclear physics to a two-year-old.
The simple truth is this is a very complex issue that all begins with who knows what started it but still lands us in the same place. People, men, women, and children out on the street. No home, no shelter, no hope!
THIS IS AMERICA AND THIS IS MORALLY WRONG AND WE ALL KNOW IT!
It is a fact of life that you cannot legislate morality. Yes, we can make laws and look down our noses at the poor, but in truth we should try looking in the mirror and reflect on the fact that one day you may be that person on the street. We are in most cases just a few paychecks away from disaster.
At Street Salvation U.S.A. we don't ask how or why a person is homeless, that is for others to help with. Our mission is to put a roof over them, feed them and get them off the street. This also applies to their pets. Stable shelter is the first step out of poverty. Not a group home, overnight shelter, warming center, but a place to call home even if it's only one room that has heating and cooling with a shower, bathroom and a bed.
A place with a locking door to feel safe from the world is like heaven to a person who has been surviving on the street.
That is our Mission!
